The Last Call (The Bill Travis Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 16,132 ratings

THE LAST CALL starts with a protagonist on the edge of an impending midlife crisis. Add a blond and an old friend with a fetish for high explosives, and you have the kickoff of a first rate crime novel. George Wier writes with wit, verve, and a gut-bucket
knowledge of Texas and those who people its quirky underside. This book does not disappoint.

—Milton T. Burton, author of Nights of the Red Moon and The Rogue’s Game.

George Wier's THE LAST CALL has it all: a great setting, characters you care about, a little Texas history, and a twisty plot that's built Texas tough. Get it before last call!

—Bill Crider, author of Murder In the Air.

Bill Travis, an unmarried, unattached investment counselor rapidly approaching his fortieth birthday, conceives that he may not live the most exciting of lives, yet Julie Simmons, his first appointment that Monday, is deeply in trouble. She has taken a North Texas quarter horse racer and liquor baron named Archie Carpin--the last of a dynasty of criminals from the 1920's--for a ride and cleaned him out of a neat two million bucks. And thus begins the adventure of Bill’s life.

Ensues a chase north across Texas to recover the money and shake the pursuit of a couple of rednecks with a penchant for rifles and rigged explosives. Yet, through all this action the compelling tale of yet another mystery—an 80-year old missing person’s case—begins to unravel.

George Wier is the author of the popular Bill Travis Mystery series, and a number of other standalone mysteries. He also writes science fiction and steampunk.

The Bill Travis Mystery series has been hailed as a tour-de-force among modern mysteries. In this adrenaline-fueled series, George Wier throws all sorts of fantastic scenarios at his protagonist. The characters and situations are often quirky, but no less true to life, and the feel is such that the reader is present alongside Bill Travis as he struggles through one disaster after another.

In his own words: "I currently live in Austin with my lovely wife, Sallie, along with two cats and two dogs. I began writing in earnest in 1986, although I have been creatively writing far longer than that. I find that I have far more ideas than I could ever write down, and so I pick and choose only the best story ideas. I write what I, myself, like to read, and nothing more. I am always happy to talk to a reader and would dearly love to hear your comments. Please visit my website at www.georgewier.com. There you will find free short stories, anecdotes, and links to other books and writers. Thanks for reading!"

The title suggests that this is going to be part of a series of books about Bill Travis, it will be interesting to see how that develops given that it is an unusual premise. The protagonist is neither a police officer nor a private detective, instead he is an investment counsellor, more used to finding the best places for people to place any extra cash they may have at their disposal. When he gets into his office on a quiet Monday morning his partner has requested that Bill take his first appointment of the morning. Monday is soon anything but quiet.
Drawn into a life on the run from desperate, and slightly incompetent would be hitmen, he finds life shrinks down to the need to survive with a woman who has upset someone she REALLY shouldn't have upset in tow. Fortunately Bill has the right contacts, who also have the right contacts which make his life a little easier, which is just as well, because the woman, Julie, isn't making life any easier. That is mostly because of what she has done, but also because of the things she isn't telling them.
This is a fast paced story of survival of the smartest rather than of the fittest. Despite the odds being stacked against them, the motley crew which have come together to try to extract Julie alive from the situation she has got herself into, find time to show compassion where it is needed and sort out other people's troubles. Not all of them are going to survive, but who will and who won't?
I actually found this book quite fun and enjoyed reading it. I will be intrigued to see what Bill Travis gets caught up in next.

Superbly written story. The characters jump out at you nd Texas is brought too life. I would recommend this as a great summer read.

I give this 3.5 stars as not quite worth 4. Try and get past the prologue of an 80 year old skeleton in a "cellar" (which
was explained eventually) and the first chapter (unnecessary), where Bill races his car in traffic against a pretty female.

I almost didn't bother after that, but glad I did. The female, Julie, later turns up at Bill's office to ask for help.
I never did understand exactly what Bill did about people's money problems as he always protested it wasn't "money laundering".

Anyway, Julie has stolen 2 million dollars from a mafia-type Texan. She and Bill fast become lovers and go on the run
together from the criminal's henchmen. As the man wanted his money back, I couldn't understand why his men kept trying to
kill Julie - hence not 4 stars.

A gun toting friend agrees to help Bill and Julie and from then on the action and pace increase. However, Bill knows that
Julie is holding a lot of information back - which always annoys me - though I suppose it makes the story! So can he trust her?

The skeleton in the prologue is traced back to an 80 year old mystery, and the end of the book is explosive.
I would probably read this book again some time, and the next in the series. There were no graphic sex scenes and not much
    bad language.

Bill Travis is an intriguing character who is a partner in a firm that purports to advise clients on their financial investments. However, he is more than a little cagey about what he actually does or how he really earns his money. When his partner refers a beautiful young woman to him, he is immediately smitten and is rapidly drawn into a web of intrigue and danger. This book has everything you could want in an action thriller. Vividly drawn characters both likeable and sinister, a good mix of sex and danger, fascinating factual historical detail and a lively, colourful background to a fast moving storyline. The action scenes are brilliantly told, combining just the right amount of vulnerability, pain, fear, courage and commitment to ensure that Bill is someone the reader desperately wants to succeed. This is a great first novel in a series that also certainly deserves to succeed.

Sorry I tried to persevere with this book, but it beat me into submission. Maybe I was just not on the same wavelength as the author, but I found it hard to get into, difficult to read for any length of time as it became confusing and repetitive. I hate to not finish a book but on this occasion I am willing to make an exception.

Well I enjoyed this almost despite myself! A 'boys own romp - think Die Hard in Texas! Completely unbelievable story, ridiculous characters including the old drunk, hard as nails guy reminiscent of the Sam Elliot character in Road House. Throw in a heroine dog, some bad guys and a couple of shadowy Feds. And of course a beautiful girl. Kept me entertained and turning the pages.

This isn't your average thriller storyline, and yet most of the characters are familiar to all of us. It's an interesting concept for a new series. It might be fun to see whether the 'difference' can be maintained over the long run. Well worth a read.

I like thrillers a lot and read voraciously whenever I find one. As I started this, I liked the tone of writing. However, as the storyline unfolded, everything became too amateurish. The backstory of the gang was not intriguing enough, the protagonist's falling in love with the girl and the stream of troubles all seemed too forced. It was hard to keep the focus and the reader's interest within me alive. Overall, I believe the writer needs a lot more brushing up to do.
