The ability to tell a story is a great – and unusual – gift . . . [it] is not something that can be taught or acquired. You have it or you don’t . . . Jeffrey Archer is, first and foremost, a storyteller . . . You don’t sell 250 million copies of your books (250 million!) if you can’t keep an audience hooked – and that’s what Archer does, book after book. Archer’s audience will stick with him to the last. Jeffrey Archer is one of the world’s bestselling authors, with sales of over 275 million copies in 97 countries, and is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction (twenty times), short stories (four times) and non-fiction (The Prison Diaries). He was born in London, and brought up in the West Country. He gained a Blue in Athletics at Oxford, was President of the University Athletics Club, and went on to run the 100 yards in 9.6 seconds for Great Britain in 1966. Jeffrey has served five years in the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament, and thirty years as a Member of the House of Lords.

He has written 27 novels, 7 sets of short stories, 3 prison diaries, 3 plays (all of which have been performed in London's West End) and a gospel. His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was sold to 17 countries within a year. It was also made into a successful serial for BBC Radio 4, and was later televised in 1990 by the BBC. He won the Prix Relay du Roman d’Évasion, a prize that rewards a novel in which readers can ‘escape from everyday life’, for his novel Paths of Glory, and the Prix Polar International Prize for the best international thriller of the year, for his novel A Prisoner of Birth. The Clifton Chronicles, a series of seven novels published between 2011-2017, topped the bestseller lists around the world.

Famous for his discipline as a writer who works on up to fourteen drafts of each book, Jeffrey also brings a vast amount of insider knowledge to his books. Whether it’s his own career in politics, his passionate interest in art, or the wealth of fascinating background detail – inspired by the extraordinary network of friends he has built over a lifetime at the heart of Britain’s establishment – his novels provide a fascinating glimpse into a range of closed worlds.

Jeffrey is also an amateur auctioneer, conducting up to 20 charity auctions a year. He has been married to Dame Mary Archer, Chair of the Science Museum Group, for 55 year, and they have two sons, two granddaughters and three grandsons. He splits his time between London, Cambridge and Mallorca - where he writes the first draft of each new novel.

The fifth book In his new William Warwick novels - the first of which, Nothing Ventured, was published in 2019 - is NEXT IN LINE which will be out in September 2022.

Brilliant storytelling and so easy to read and empathise with. Loved it! Super twist at the end - didn't see that coming.

A compelling story of a boy winning against all the odds through an educational system beyond his social level, but never beyond his abilities. And his hard-working, widowed mother, Maisie, is determined to give Harry the best of opportunities. But past encounters with an ex are never far away, and when Harry befriends Giles Barrington, his meddlesome, fraudulent father, Hugo, does his best to deny what happened between Harry’s mother and himself all those years ago.

A slow start, but then the story began to really draw me in and the big question about Harry’s parentage ebbed and flowed beneath the surface until the build to the denouement – where everything falls apart beneath an avalanche of revelations. I wasn’t quite convinced that both Hugo Barrington and Maisie Clifton would have allowed matters between Emma and Harry to get quite as far as they did, not without some sort of intervention. Hugo perhaps, because he was such a cowardly toad but Maisie had a good handle on moral responsibility and lived for her son, so I’m not sure she would have simply stood by. Not only are there some unresolved threads in this book, but the story ends on the most terrific cliffhanger of a plot twist, so if you prefer everything to be tied-up with a ribbon by the last page, you might feel cheated.
The writing itself is concise and to the point and without too much of a descriptive slant, but it’s a clever structure and the likeable characters combined with steadily building tension, kept me turning the pages. There are slightly overlapping timelines shared between the characters but I liked this structure as it allowed for a greater understanding, not only of the character viewpoints and motivations but in the way it brought to light more and more subtle information. This is a heart-warming story, an easy-read of a historical family-saga with a slightly soapy feel. The sort of fiction which doesn’t pretend to be anything else, and I really enjoyed it.

The indefatigable Jeffrey Archer has the rare and happy knack of creating characters with whom the reader instantly bonds and feels concern for. As soon as we are introduced to young Harry Clifton we are on his side and warm feelings follow when life goes his way.

The first of the Clifton Chronicles is a satisfyingly fat read, reminiscent of The Forsyte Saga. 'Only Time Will Tell' was a treat that I frequently looked forward to getting back to, thinking about it often. That was until I gave up the struggle and read the book all day long.

Helpful, sometimes surprisingly placed supporters gather around Harold Clifton's childhood and, like fairy godmothers at a christening, bless the boy with fortune beyond expectation. Alas, there are also darker forces at work...

The first section, the education of Harry, is written in a friendly positive style, a school story of impeccable pedigree, a mixture of literary schoolboy memories, and very easy to get involved with. I felt a sense of frustration when this appeared to come to an end, as I was more than anxious to see what happened next.

The change in typeface announces that the Clifton Chronicles are moving along with their next strand. I pressed greedily on and found that the story of Harry was being fleshed out from a different perspective, his mother's, Maisie. Some little details that had been touched lightly on earlier become clearer, rewarding the attention given. And so on throughout the cast, Jeffrey Archer generously and deftly dots the i's and crosses the t's, each narrator/subject bringing more to the feast. Some reviewers have found that this laboured the point but it also builds robust foundations.

So far it is set in the 'days before DNA' but hopefully not the 'days before fingerprints'! Of course it is tantalising that we will have to patiently wait for the next edition. This is a tease that was shared by Dickens with his chapters and other soap opera style cliff hangers and so, well, hunger is the best sauce; our openhanded host Jeffrey Archer is no doubt cooking up future excitements and yes, that is something very much to look forward to. And almost certainly that patience will be rewarded, although..Only Time Will Tell...

I just started the Clifton Chronicles by chance and now I can't stop reading this excellent chain of events. The only problem with Amazon is every future book has a small description next to the title, so you sort of know who survives even before you get there when you search for books. It's a real spoiler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start!
Reviewed in the United States on 4 December 2016
Great start to a (so far) great series. I'm on book 3 at the moment and still gripped by this well paced, well plotted tale. I love the structure, whereby the characters are given their own chapters, running parallel, in the same time lines.
Okay, so coincidence and one-in-a-million chances rule but such is the quality of writing and storyline, that you easily bypass the 'unlikely' and accept that though not probable they are possible...this IS fiction after all.
I should state that I am a Archer fan. Many moons ago, I read Kane & Abel and have since, read just a out everything the man has written. There is something Kane & Abel(ish) about this tale and that suits me perfectly because I still think of that as Mr. Archer's best to date, or maybe 'my favourite', would be more accurate given that it is very much subjective. I think that this series is probably going to take the top spot in my own personal 'Archer list'. I'm fairly confident that it will continue to hold my attention to the end - seven books - if it continues, as it started.
Above all else, Mr. Archer is a storyteller and a bloody good one! Existing fans will have already started reading this series, maybe even finished it. To those, who have never picked up a book by this master storyteller, this book/series would be a great place to start, while bearing in mind that he is a more diverse writer than this.
I bought the first three books on amazon.co.uk for my kindle at 99p each...how is it NOT worth taking a chance, with offers like that? Go ahead, try it, I'm confident that you'll like it
