This is the former! Just right for reading when you're not feeling great yourself....

I have had this book for ages but finally I got to read it and was not disappointed.
In the author's introduction, he set out his aims and I believe he achieved them.
This is a good crime thriller with an interesting storyline, great, fully developed characters and written well.
I did not "solve" the crimes myself which is always a sign of good writing and neither was I disappointed.
This may have been my first Jack Daniels book but certainly not the last. I have a real "taste" for them

J A Konrath's debut novel is an impressive one, with plenty of smart one-liners, characters that draw you into their world (particularly the protagonist, Jack (Jacqueline) Daniels, Chicago Police Lieutenant) and several well-executed conflict threads that keep the tension crackling and concern for the characters high.
The plot concerns a serial killer called the Gingerbread Man, who's dumping the bodies of young women in garbage cans outside convenience stores.
As you'd expect, the story revolves around the developing duel between Lt Jack Daniels and the killer... most of it is told from Jack's point of view, but every few chapters there's a glimpse into the Gingerbread Man's mind as we follow him about his gruesome business -- which isn't just about torture and murder: the part that really had me on the edge of my seat was seeing who was going to end up with a mouthful of x-acto blades from one of his doctored candy bars.
I found it easy to keep turning the pages and hard to put the book down when it was time to go to sleep -- the chapters are short and punchy, and there's always the temptation to read just one more to find out what happens next.

I wouldn't exactly describe this book as unputdownable, sometimes I had to put it down for a moment because the tension was getting to me. The author builds the suspense well and it impacts on the reader. As the detective walks headlong into danger I found myself wondering "how on earth is she going to get out of this one?" The perils are laid out for the reader but of course the heroine knows nothing of them. Somehow you begin to care what happens to her very early on, I found myself getting irritated with her and had to laugh at my reactions. There is an unknown man out there trying to kill her and she thinks it is reasonable to join a dating agency???
The scenario is brutal and the author doesn't pull his punches, but all is lightened with wit and dark humour. Yes this cop has the almost obligatory dsyfunctional life & relationships but she is real and deals with it in an authentic way. I wasn't sure which descriptions are worse - the gory bits or the hygiene and eating habits of Jack's partners.
This book being the first in a series, I have enjoyed it enough to have downloaded most of the sequels. I am looking forward to the next one Bloody Mary - A Thriller (Jack Daniels Mysteries)

I'm not a big fan of crime thrillers. My opinion = Karin Slaughter is boring, Simon Kernick is repetitive, and James Patterson is the worst writer alive.

But this book is pretty good. My complaint is minimal, driven by idiosyncracies, and probably won't bother others. To put it bluntly, I wasn't a fan of the protagonist's methods of communicating with The Gingerbread Man. I mean, would you really surrender yourself to someone who goes out of their way to annoy you? No. You would kill more people to send a message. Wouldn't a psychopath need understanding from others to their situation? I can happily say that's my only nit-picking of this novel.

The comedic side of it only adds to the entertainment. Jack's partner Herb and the two FBI Agents being the most entertaining characters. And I thought the dialogue was fairly authentic compared to everyday conversation.

The mystery/suspense/terror part of the novel was also great, and only made it damn hard to put down. It's the kind of novel where you will continuously think "okay, one more chapter", hours into the night. And guess what? JA Konrath is better than James Patterson. Much better. I can see where the influence originates from. The Alex Cross novel style is there. But Konrath pulls it off better. He can write chapters longer than three pages.

At 276 pages I didn't feel cheated at all. It is what it is and doesn't attempt to be bigger than that. So many novels do that nower days and fall flat on their face. Especially crime thrillers.

JA Konrath deserves his own shelf.

First in the series of Jack Daniels novels by Konrath, which is highly a recommended read. The characters have great dynamic with Daniels and her Police partner Herb providing highly entertaining banter and shenanigans, with the FBI agents (or feebies) providing some amusing moments with their profiling theories. The plot and story twist and turns like a the proverbial cork screw - it really is hard to put down which is a great testament to the authors ability to deliver a knockout thriller. Konrath demonstrates a very high level of detail in some of the gruesome scenes, which may not be to everyone’s taste – but those who are unfazed by the nitty gritty will love every moment and detail. I cannot wait to read all the Jack Daniels series.

This is a 4.5 star read.

A surprisingly great find on Kindle Australia, this is an exceptional murder mystery that kept me riveted to the page. Written in a very "blokey" style, our protagonist, Jack, is a female given more than her fair share of ribbing due to her name. There are amusing moments woven throughout the story and I especially liked the author's and protagonist's obvious disdain for the F.B.I.'s profiling unit. Highly recommended.

    Page turner of a novel.
A psycho killer is on loose. The way he goes about killing his targets is just unbelievable and very INHUMAN.
Lieutenant Jack Daniels along with detective Herb is imcharge of the investigation.
The killer's main kick is derived from thinking of possessing Jack.
Why is the psycho killing? Why does he want Jack?
Read this novel to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man.
Reviewed in the United States on 14 May 2013
Well of course you can if your name is Jack Daniels!

The Lieutenant Jack Daniels series by J.A. Konrath is a hoot. There is everything that should make this series a pleasure to read: a crazed killer; a dedicated homicide detective and tons of humor. In "Whiskey Sour", Jack Daniels finds herself in quite the pickle...her boyfriend has left her for his personal trainer; her partner (Herb) is encouraging her to get back into the dating pool; and she is trying to catch a killer who leaves gingerbread men at the scene beside the bodies of mutilated women. To complicate matters "The Gingerbread Man" has found a game that he loves, killing and he's getting better at it. Once he's set his eyes on Jack, there is no stopping him. After all he lives to stalk, abduct, strangle, and mutilate women before disposing of their bodies, leaving behind a signature gingerbread man cookie. Jack just hopes that she can catching her latest nemesis.

What I like the most about the Jack Daniels series is that: (1) they are funny, (2) well written, (3) entertaining and (4) just plain fun! For example, there is one scene in the book where two FBI profilers, who feed off of one another, rattle off a profile (in tandem) that simply had me in stitches. The claimed that the killer they were hunting liked..... line dancing...wearing women's underwear (probably his mother's)...is impotent (and maybe even gay)...hears voices (or maybe just his mother's).....is probably disfigured, disabled and/or maybe has acne scars...was dropped on his head...and likes western bars....and may even have a hunchback". And the laughs don't stop when they later revise the profile (to include something about a horse). In a way, these books remind me of the Stephanie Plum or Stephanie Bond series (although I think these are better written or have more personality)...in that there is a strong female lead character (who is funny and resourceful), who has relationship issues (clearly Jack is still in love with her ex-husband, she barely batted an eye when the boyfriend left her for his personal trainer). However, the strong female lead in this case Jack, doesn't mind a little introspection (looking inside herself) and she doesn't take herself too seriously. She isn't perfect but flawed (works too much and too hard; dedicated to her job; and suffers from insomnia.....and I'm not necessarily saying these are bad things. There are, of course, some other characters that are worth mentioning. Herb, her ever faithful partner (and at times brother figure) who has an ravenous appetite, tries to be the voice of reason and keep her on an enlightened path (even if he needs a pizza to do it); Harry, an old friend/partner who manages to get under her skin and yet help in his own way; and her mother (a retired cop who while growing old still manages a relationship with an elderly man that she claims is insatiable). And then there are the killers that Konrath creates, while they may not too original (in that all serial killers do basically the same thing....plot/plan, kill, and then make some stupid mistake that eventually gets them caught) , they always convey a sense of evil, which always makes the reader invest in the story.

I really enjoyed "Whiskey Sour" and would recommend it! It would make a wonderful summer read while you sit on the beach.

Yes, I try to avoid stories involving serial killers, and picked this book up inadvertently. But, I gave t a few chapter and got to like the lead character enough to continue. I got hooked and it got that I couldn’t put the story down. A great read after all and I recommend you all give it a try - even if you’re not into serial killer stories.
