Peter John was born in Bromley Kent, England in 1973. He gained an interest in creative writing at the age of 14 and was published during the 1990's in several poetry anthologies. Happily Married to Jo since 1996 and currently living in Rochester.

About Me.

I was born in Bromley, Kent back in the early seventies. I spent most of my childhood riding bikes, playing tag and kicking tin cans around the street, unless there was an actual football to hand. At the age of fourteen I had a milestone experience. Prior to that I had never shown the slightest interest in writing, if I remember rightly I wanted to be an astronaut, but then I got put into detention one afternoon. I had failed to bring in my homework assignment and the teacher had punished me by forcing me to write a short story during the lunch time break. While all the other boys kicked tin cans around the playground, I was sat in a room on my own with a sandwich, a carton of Kia-Ora and an exercise book. I picked at the sandwich while staring at the blank pages in front of me and then it happened. All of a sudden a story formed in my head and I almost instinctively threw in down on the paper. 45 minutes passed in what felt like seconds and the short story which I had called ’Thinking Crash’ was spread throughout the exercise book in my scruffy, barely coherent handwriting. I had never fallen into a story like that before, where my hand was struggling to keep up with my brain and I didn’t look up once from the pages until I heard the lunch bell ring. Ever since that day I have been hooked. I could have been circling the earth in a tin can and eating my dinner out of a tube if it wasn’t for that one stint in detention; I still like to consider it as a lucky escape.

OPINIONS OF GHOSTS

You would expect me, being the author of a paranormal comedy, to be a great believer in ghosts but you would be wrong in that assumption. You would then presume that I have never seen a ghost and again you would be mistaken, confused yet? I consider myself to be a hopeful sceptic; hopeful because I would really like to be able to break free of my own Cynicism and a sceptic because no matter how hard I try, I can’t. Even after seeing things that I can’t explain myself, I fail to convert myself into a believer on the basis that just because I can’t prove it false doesn’t mean it’s true. I regret this standpoint entirely, I see all the benefits in believing in something as strongly as some people believe in the existence of ghosts and other forms of supernatural beings but I don’t seem capable of stepping over that final hurdle of doubt, and I blame psychics for this entirely. Years of hearing how people have been fleeced for more money than they can comfortably afford by Clairvoyants and Mediums has left me armoured against certain aspects of the supernatural. Con artists and schemers who have promised them answers to the soul burning questions that we all ask of ourselves during times of grief. Is there more? Are they truly gone or are they just behind the curtain of death, waiting for me to join them? Are they watching over me, right here, as we speak My mother is a great believer in the spiritual powers of others and has often remarked on her own psychic ability. I have to agree that on occasion she has made remarkable predictions that have turned out to be true, though sometimes it has been in a ‘ball park’ kind of way. Through out my childhood I have listened to her stories about what this medium said and what that psychic told her but I have also listened to the recording of such spiritual meetings. “I have a name coming through. It’s faint but I think it begins with an A, it might be an O or an E. It’s definitely starts with a vowel or there’s a vowel in there somewhere at least”. My mother never failed to fall hook line and sinker but, even at a young age, I could see the vague and fishing manner in which they all spoke. It made me cynical and suspicious when it came down to beings from another plain of existence and I have yet failed to shrug this guarded approach. Maybe one day I will find the proof I need, or experience something that will turn my head a full 360 until I’m sceptical about whether living people actually exist, but until that day I will remain full of questions, doubts and hopes.

A series of 22 poems, with an eclectic choice of themes, if nearly all with a hint of sad resignation. They are observant, thoughtful pieces, nicely structured, with an unobtrusive rhyme-scheme, often dwelling on the hardships of life, both in a physical sense as with the down-and-outs of society, and in an introspective sense. Just to give a flavour, here is a lovely image of memories (in the poem `Memories'): `Like drops of water, from your mind they leak.' These lines from `The World at our Feet' give a flavour of the mix of observation and melancholia that pervades the poems: `The light from the moon,/Merely brightens the gloom,/Of the dark, drizzly streets below.' An intriguing selection.

I do not normally read poetry, but I took a look at this after reading Dead Medium (By the same author). I really enjoyed reading it, a nice mixture of poems, some very humourous, and other sensitive and thoughtful. My only critique would be that it could have done with an index, so I could dip in and re-read some of the poems more easily.

Love the insight he has into the despair of someone who has lost everything and is living on the streets. The Christmas ones are such a treat. Mushroom is so true. I would have no qualms about buying this book it's an absolute treasure to be read again and again.

I am a fan of poetry in many forms, from complex structured poetry to free verse to hip hop and even to rhyming verses for children, which I can share with my son. This book by Peter John is a delightful find, and contains well-written, short poems of a mixed nature, some happy, some funny and some sad. I prefered some to others, but that is the beauty of this book - there is something for everyone! Recommended.

A fascinating recourse from the amazing author of Dead Medium ... Wrapped in Brown Paper is a collection of witty poems that are just the right blend for reading in-between meals and at bedtime. Strong rhymes with a touch of professionalism. If you haven't read this author, you should check out 'Dead Medium'!

I became a fan of this author after reading Dead Medium (which is wonderful and I highly recommend) So when I heard he'd released this book of poems, I decided to pick up a copy, and I'm glad I did. Wrapped Up In Brown Paper And Other Poems by Peter John is a charming collection of poetry. They are a diverse gathering of thoughts, strung together perhaps, by the common theme of making us think, even the amusing ones carry some message. I liked "The Future Mushroom," which begins,
    "Fingers hover over the button,
    That nobody dares to press.
    Until someone comes into power,
    Who's crazier than the rest."
I wanted to paste them all in here because they're all enjoyable and wanting to be shared. I hope this is the first of many volumes from this author. Highly recommended - 5 stars.

Wrapped Up In Brown Paper And Other Poems by Peter John: This short read has some wonderful poems that flow nicely and are fun to read. I enjoyed them very much and wished there had been more.

Each poem clearly has plenty of thought behind the words and you can easily picture all them. "Wrapped Up In Brown Paper" "The World at Our Feet" "Splat" and "Memories" are probably favorites, along with "Christmas on Line." All beautiful poems in their own way and for the finale Wrapped Up In Brown Paper II is a must read.

Receiving this copy for an honest review, I recommend you read these poems and then re-read them. Dead Medium is the first book I read by this author and it was also a great and humorous read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry You Will Get and Enjoy!

I am not well read as far as poetry goes, but a person knows what they like and knows what speaks to them. I would recommend Peter John’s poetry to anyone who enjoys reading.

There’s a poem that speaks to anyones moods, thoughts, circumstance, fears, frustrations, joys, trials, and triviales of life. A few of my favorites from this book are: The Last Resort, The Future Mushroom, Broken Promise.

What I loved about this poetry is it makes sense, it’s easy and I mean that in a good way. I don’t want to have to analyze a poem trying to make sense of it until I’m biting my nails and left feeling nothing because I just don’t get it, as some poetry leaves me.

This is poetry you will get and enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars I don't enjoy all poetry and I have my favorites

I have read poetry from all over the world. I don't enjoy all poetry and I have my favorites. Poetry is self expression in my opinion. This book of poetry was fairly short. I liked some of the poems in this book and some not so much. He has a clear modern style that makes sense. Not my favorite book of poetry but was easy to read and understand. Pleasant read while waiting in the doctor's office, helps time pass more quickly.

I was a bit stunned to see poems by Peter John, but wasn't surprised by how good they were. He has an amazing writing style and enormous wit. I urge you to read Mr. John's novel, Dead Medium, which will have you laughing from start to finish!

Wrapped Up In Brown Paper And Other Poems: Is an eclectic compilation of prose reflecting more than John's usual wit, and will leave readers pondering life. I highly recommend this great collection of verse by Peter John.

I read this poem's book from Peter John. It is well written. I really enjoyed it, especially the two poems 'Wrapped up in Brown Paper.' Some of the written poems reflect a life lived as a homeless person, which in our times has increased. Only a person who has lived it, can identify with it. I loved the cover illustration. I would like to read more of his books.
