Saint Elm's Deep (The Legend of Vanx Malic Book 3) Kindle Edition

Here is what people are saying about Vanx Malic: I felt like I was in a whole new world reading this book... The storyline was also amazing. I would recommend anyone who loves fantasy books to read this as you will def be swept into this world! - Avid Reader Reviews (*Review of Through the Wildwood, Book One) "You've (Mathias) already achieved much, much more than so many people who like to think of themselves as writers." -- @Gollancz The Deputy Publishing Director of SF, Fantasy & Horror list of the Orion Publishing Group. "When reading this book, I was reminded of several other fantasy novels that I have read previously. The author's style is individual, but it has the flavor of a Tolkien novel, or possibly Robert Jordan. I detected a great amount of affection in his deliverance of the characters, and their progress throughout the story was handled well. I must say that Vanx is quite a likeable rogue, and the way that the story begins certainly grabs the reader, pulling them into the story whether they like it, or not." -- Kindle Review (*Review of Through the Wildwood, Book One) Entertaining, action packed, and witty. Overall a good second book that starts where the first left off and I look forward to the next. - Jacob (Review of Dragon Isle, Book Two) Snippet from Saint Elm's Deep, The Legend of Vanx Malic Book III: “I’ve been listening to all your spook talk for days,” Kegger said quite clearly, but with a caravaneers crudeness to his words. All of the gargan accent that had been in his voice when speaking of knives and bows, during his battling with Chelda, was gone, as if it had never been there. “My orders were to get you to the Lurr and wait for you to come out.” He hefted his axe and thumbed the edge he’d been sharpening nightly at the fire. “I’ve got a good bit of unfinished business in them woods myself. Twern’t no frost bite that took his limbs. The tree that had my brother was real. I swear it. I had to cut him from it. It was foul smelling, and as evil as the Letch itself. It bled thick red blood, just like you or I would, where my ax struck. I hurt it, and it screamed right at me before it turned Sean loose. It weren’t no magic fairy tree. This was as black and cold as the Letcher’s own wrath.” “But you saw no sign of the fae in the Lurr Forest?” Gallarael asked. “If I did, I didn’t know what it was,” Kegger chuckled. “Deer, elk, bear, and wolf. I know their sign well, but I’ve never seen a fairy turd, much less been inclined to look for one.” The Legend of Vanx Malic continues with Book Three, "Saint Elm's Deep" After finding a map on a grueling hunt, Vanx and his new companions decide to travel deep into the Bitterpeaks, where a fabled hoar witch's crystal palace supposedly sits hidden in a valley called Saint Elm's Deep. The story deepens, as we delve into Vanx's past and the future of as unlikely a group of heroes as you will ever find. Action and adventure, drama and thrills, and a barrel keg full of fantasy adventure await readers in Saint Elm's Deep, the third installment of The Legend of Vanx Malic. Look for book four, "That Frigid Fargin' Witch" in early 2014. Other titles by M. R. Mathias: Short Stories: Crimzon & Clover I - Orphaned Dragon, Lucky Girl Crimzon & Clover II - The Tricky Wizard Crimzon & Clover III - The Grog Crimzon & Clover IV - The Wrath of Crimzon Crimzon & Clover V - Killer of Giants Crimzon & Clover Collection One (stories 1-5) The Saga of the Dragoneers: The First Dragoneer - Free The Royal Dragoneers - Now Available Cold Hearted Son of a Witch - Now Available The Confliction - Now Available The Emerald Rider - Now Available And don't miss the huge International Bestselling epic: The Wardstone Trilogy Book One - The Sword and the Dragon Book Two - Kings, Queens, Heroes, & Fools Book Three - The Wizard & the Warlord

M. R. Mathias cares for his wife, a Breast Cancer Warrior who has Parkinson's. After raising two boys into fine young men, they and two dogs split their time between a modest smalltown home, and an apartment built on a floating dock on Lake Ultura (aka Lake Texoma) which foots into an amazing State Park brimming with all sorts of wildlife. Like the wizards of old, he tends to the animals who share the area and inspire the creatures in his works. He likes to fish, write, play guitar, and he builds all sorts of things out of reclaimed wood. He sold over two million eBooks most of them before eBooks were cool. His work is critically acclaimed, and has earned multiple literary awards, including a coveted Locus Poll nomination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vanx Malic - WOW + Lord of the rings + Arctic expedition = WINNER!
Reviewed in Canada on 10 November 2014
Reading this book, I'm put somewhere between Lord of the rings, World of Warcraft and a great Arctic expedition. I find it very easy to dive into a book when an author is able to describe his or her setting well, and M. R. Mathias is very good at doing exactly that. Setting the scene for a fantasy novel is one of the key ingredients that needs to be done well, and it certainly is.

Another thing I believe is an absolute must for me being able to enjoy a book is some elements of humour, and The characters display their humour well, I especially loved some of the comedic writing of their experiences in the Tundra in chapter 5, Darbon's dialogue about his "experience going to the bathroom" had me laughing out loud, The dog's name is hilarious, and there is plenty of other subtle humour throughout.

Also worthy of note, being a poetry fan myself, I enjoy the little introductions to each chapter a lot.

Old Master Wiggins loved the Spring Fair dance. He twirled and spun so hard and fast, he came out of his pants. -- a Parydon street ditty

    Mathias, M. R. (2013-11-20). Saint Elm's Deep (The Legend of Vanx Malic) (p. 99). . Kindle Edition.

This book genuinely has a bit of everything you could want from a great fantasy tale. The story isn't fully resolved at the end, and book 4 is next to follow. May I remind anyone interested in this series that book 1 is available for FREE. That's how I started on my journey with Vanx Malic, and if you're a fan of great fantasy stories, you should definitely do the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great story
Reviewed in the United States on 28 November 2013
This book was a surprising and exciting turn from the end of the second book. If you’ve read it, you’ll remember that things end a little uncertainly. The reader isn’t really sure where the story is heading, what the next journey is. This book stands alone pretty well so if you’re starting here for some reason, I don’t think you’ll have a problem. The back story is given as needed and never drags on. The journey moves quickly and keeps you questioning what’s going to happen next. Vanx is on a rather soul-searching expedition this time. He’s being called to a location related to his heritage and he has no idea why or by whom.

Many of the characters in this book are new and come from vary different backgrounds. One of my favorite things about Mathias’s writing is that he brings together diverse groups of people for a common goal. Not that all the characters are thrilled about it, mind you. But they work through their prejudices and most come out much better people at the end of it. In the book, these happens because there’s rarely a choice for the characters. But for the reader it’s a great story about embracing diversity; each culture has its own knowledge and skills and everyone is necessary to make things work. It’s not entirely unlike other books in this genre, but it’s a nice thing to see in each of his books.

The story begins with a hunt that takes a reasonable amount of time. I’m not going to lie, if a particular battle or episode in a journey takes too long, I’m usually not going to stick around. But in this book, like all his others, Mathias is good at measuring out the plot and keeping things moving. He can describe a scene more than well enough to give you a picture without feeling like you’re getting unnecessary details. The hunt at the beginning is a great way to get a feel for the new characters and slowly introduce past ones (to new readers). But it’s the following quest that will capture you.

I don’t want to give too much away of course, but the story behind Vanx’s existence is unique, even in Mathias’s work. He is an extraordinary character and a hero no one would refuse to cheer for. I knew I was hooked when I found out his current expedition relates to his own past. There is so much mystery surrounding this character that the reader is eager to get on the journey and find out something concrete about him. The legends behind his birth are fleshed out and he comes to understand much more about himself along the way.

Like all of Mathias’s books, the expedition takes many unexpected turns and there are a lot of enemies and creatures to defeat along the way. I will say you’re a little safer getting attached to characters this time around. But it’s not the final book so I may be speaking too soon, but I did notice it since most of the time Mathias has no qualms letting a character bite the dust. It’s not a bad thing; it makes the plots more realistic. But sometimes you want to read without serious anxiety.

But don’t expect all the answers in this book. There’s a fourth book and it looks like it will hold much more intense information and battles. It ends at a crucial moment and I can’t wait to read the next one. I hope that’s not a deterrent because I don’t mean it as one. If you’ve made it to book three, I don’t think you’ll be surprised or have a problem finding out that you won’t get all your answers in this book. But if you stick with Mathias and Vanx, everything will wrap up cleanly in the end. I’ve finished a couple other series by him and I’ve not been disappointed.
The style here is clean and well-organized. It’s always clear that Mathias plans his storylines well in advance. He knows his characters and his world exceptionally well. Every one of his books has been a great investment of time and I look forward to future publications. Mathias has the talent to compete in this overwhelmed genre and this book is a great addition to his work. I would recommend reading the first two before tackling this one, but it really has the strength to stand alone if you want to jump in. But you won’t fully appreciate the difficulty Vanx has faced up till now without reading the first two. Either way, it’s a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read
Reviewed in Australia on 23 November 2013
Saint Elm's Deep has been timely released for holiday reading. If you already have the two former books of the series, Through Wildwood and The Sword Dragon Revised, then you know the writing style of Mathias.
You won't be disappointed in the third in this series as it reintroduces some of the earlier characters and picks up some new ones, although not too many.
This book doesn't need a lot of new characters and it is still full of the action that is so popular in Mathias books. Once again you will feel that you are swept up in the story and you will find it hard to put down.
As you are swept along you will enjoy the humor that is woven into the story. It relieves some of the longer story-telling and endears you to the characters. Vanx, as usual, is popular with the ladies and wherever he goes there always seem to be more happening that around other characters.
A good read, can't wait for no 4 to be released in early 2014.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action-Packed Yet Touching. Vanx is a True Hero
Reviewed in the United States on 21 January 2014
The fiction series of The Legend of Vanx Malic continues with Book Three-Saint Elm's Deep. In this episode, the author M. R. Mathias takes Vanx on a grueling hunt with old and new companions to connect with the mystery of his past and to cement the vision of his next mission. True to his style, Mathias makes full use of the fantasy genre to serve his readers a substantial diet of action, adventure, intrigue, drama and thrills; while continuing his themes of love, friendship, teamwork, trust and greed.

This edition further develops Vanx's character as he grows into the true hero that he is. Although a fantasy action figure, Vanx is not afraid to show his soft side of affection and compassion which makes him real and quite like-able. A role model and father figure to his team mates (who he calls his friends), Vanx offers advice to Salma about her love interest Darbon "Take the time to consider his emotional wounds...Tact and caution will get you a lot further..." The relationships between himself and Darbon, Gallarael and his beloved dog Poops are to be admired.

Once again, Mathias throws together some interesting and colorful characters to undertake the most riveting escapades of their lives. The reader shares with the characters, the thrill of victory and the pain of death as they journey to both The Great Vale and Bitterpeaks. They all become heroes and heroines revealing their inner emotions and problems and embracing each other's growth and triumphs. They come to a deep understanding that "We're all in this together" according to Vanx. Seeing Chelda the big-boned huntress, break down in tears as she reveals her past is heart wrenching.

An easy, uncomplicated read with informal language and dialogue, the book pulls the reader in with detailed description of thrilling scenes, battles and dangerous creatures that the characters encounter on treacherous terrain. Mathias certainly keeps the reader turning the pages of this nail-biting fantasy adventure. As Vanx wisely says to Darbon "Never say it can't be worse.... As soon as you do, it usually gets that way." and "Sometimes you just have to let go and hope that the fall doesn't kill you"

Amidst the intrigue and drama are some lighter moments of humor and entertainment which Mathias uses as a gentle reminder that this is just a fantasy. "You wouldn't happen to have a spell that could help me learn to dance in the next few hours, would you?" Darbon asks the wizard.

Although the third book of a series, The Legend of Vanx Malic Book Three-Saint Elm's Deep stands on its own as Mathias cleverly updates the reader on what happens to characters of Books One and Two. This is helpful especially if the reader missed Book Two.

In this Legend, Vanx Malic makes it to Saint Elmo's Deep and leaves with a mission to another fantasy adventure... to Book Four?...can't wait!

5.0 out of 5 stars `Don't get lost out in the cold, or the old hoar witch will have your soul.'
Reviewed in the United States on 10 March 2015
Author M.R. Mathias is an award-winning self-published Fantasy Writer. He is noted for his epic fantasy novels and his prolific social network marketing activity. `Reading fantasy takes us away from reality to a place where impossible things are possible and the righteous somehow find a way to win the day.' And nothing could be more true than stepping into the world of The Legend of Vanx Malic. Mathias freely states his past: `I was in and out of jail since I was a teenager. I used to have a serious drug habit. I stole stuff, I lied, and I abused every known drug on the streets. My charges were for drug possession, that is what I did time for. I also did time when I was younger for burglary. Writing was my salvation. I was in maximum security for a while, over a few fights. I was in a dungeon cell 23 hours a day, everyday.' All the novels were written in longhand, without the luxury of spell check, or word processors, or even a dictionary. Now he is noted for his epic fantasy novels and his prolific social network marketing activity. His 2011 book `The First Ten Steps' shares shared his considerable knowledge of self-promotion. Searching for further information about this author reveals a man less concerned about resume status than about storytelling and his book are directed at the Young Adult sector. And as one interviewer remarked, `Kudos to Mathias for having the audacity to be openly reveal his darkest secrets. It made him the person he is today, an extremely talented fantasy author. He dared to step outside the line and risk just how far he could go.' Mathias has been clean and free since his release, and he has every intention of staying that way.

THE LEGEND OF VANX MALIC is a four part series and while it is important to read the entire series for the maximum effect of Mathias' fantasy epic, this Book 3 - SAINT ELM'S DEEP - is strong enough to stand alone. Background of some characters may be missing but Mathias is a sure writer and fills in the blanks where necessary. BOOK 3 - After finding a map on a grueling hunt, Vanx and his new companions decide to travel deep into the Bitterpeaks, where a fabled hoar witch's crystal palace supposedly sits hidden in a valley called Saint Elm's Deep. The final volume THAT FRIGID FARGIN WITCH ties it all together.

You must read MR Mathias to appreciate the manner in which he holds together characters through long novels and brings solutions to all the adventures he creates. Some have difficult with the names at first, but remember this is fantasy and no easy common name would be suitable. Mathias knows exactly how to weave a spell that entraps us from book to book.
