Their unlikely friendship spawns the Boxer Boys, a bond of close-knit brothers-in-arms committed to defend each other against those wishing to invade their territory.
Yet for both boys, hidden dangers lurk closer to home and when a series of shocking events shatter both their dreams, it isn’t until eight years later that Arnie attempts to rekindle their seemingly unbreakable bond.

NICK RIPPINGTON is an award-winning author of crime and psychological thrillers.

He is a member of the Crime Writers Association and was the last-ever Welsh Sports Editor of the now defunct News of The World.

A national sports journalist with a wealth of experience, Nick took the plunge and began writing crime thrillers when Rupert Murdoch shut down Europe’s biggest-selling Sunday newspaper in 2011 as a result of the phone hacking scandal.

His debut novel Crossing The Whitewash came out in 2015, receiving an honourable mention in the Writers’ Digest Self-publishing eBook awards.

That launched the Boxer Boys series, which has found a niche in the growing UK gangland market. To date, there are four books in the series - Crossing The Whitewash, Spark Out, Dying Seconds and Bare Lies.

Nick’s creation of the notorious Dolan family, their associates and enemies has been greeted with acclaim by some of the country’s most prestigious book bloggers.

Meanwhile, his standalone psychological thriller Rabette Run has been described as ‘Alice in Wonderland... with tanks and guns’ with a twist you didn’t see coming. Rabette Run (published by Red Dragon) and Crossing the Whitewash are both available as audio books while the first three novels in the Boxer Boys series are available in digital format with Amazon as a box set.

The Jagged Scar, Nick’s 6th novel, is a spin-off of the Boxer Boys which can be read as a standalone, as can all his books. It is based in 1970s Soho, London, and you may notice a few characters that appear much later in the saga.

Nick has now moved out of East London to the wilds of Suffolk. He is married to Liz and has two daughters, Jemma and Olivia.

Cracking read! This is an author to watch. For a first novel it is quite a challenge to achieve all the right ingredients but Nick Rippington did it for me. The characters came alive on the page through his artful development of each character as the story unfolds. Some of them were scary, some likeable but they were all believable and no doubt would remind many readers of real-life people they have met.

One of the interesting things about the book was the unusual mingling of the football and rugby backdrops. It worked a treat. The author's life experiences were certainly visible throughout with Gareth's reporter character set in a provincial newspaper and I assume the authenticity of the 'Hammers' and East End background can be attributed to the author's time spent working in Wapping.

Despite the violent start to the book and other moments of gangland violence, it had many humorous moments too. I fell about laughing at some of them. Besides humour and violence, there was also pathos and some heart-tugging moments.

As a first novel the pacing was excellent after a sluggish start. That may seem a little strange to readers of this book owing to the early introduction of the psychopathic Arnie. But, the first chapter didn't quite draw me in. Yet, I am so pleased I read it through to the last page. After that start I simply could not put it down.

A thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended book.

Really enjoyed this - not surprising as it combined two of my favourite things, crime fiction and rugby. The background of the world cup is apt this current time with the RWC in progress - I really enjoyed the characters, particularly the 'The Legend' as well as the mayhem that surrounds Cardiff on international day! There are a number of good twists in the plot which keeps the reader engaged to the end. Nice one, butt!

Crossing the Whitewash is a curious novel. Part gangland thriller, part suspense, with a good dose of sport thrown in, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I thought it was a good novel to read during the initial stages of the World Cup.

Regular readers of my blog will no doubt have figured out by now that I am most definitely Welsh, but what they probably don't know is that I am a massive rugby fan, and I love the World Cup, its such an exciting tournament - I digress...

Upon its opening Crossing the Whitewash appears to be a novel about gangland London, Gary Marshall is saved from bullies, by the renowned Arnie Dolan. The pair become largely inseparable until a tragic accident changes everything for Gary.

The pair remain in touch until an incident after a football match sends them their separate ways. Fast forward several years and we meet (the now) Gareth Prince (Gary Marshall) at a job interview for a Wales' best selling Sunday Sports paper. Now a reasonably successful reporter, Gareth is determined to hold down a decent job and make a new life for himself in Wales.

Unfortunately Gareth knows next to nothing about rugby, which is pretty much a cardinal sin in Wales. Luckily with the help of the work experience boy, his Father and an ex-Welsh Rugby international known simply as 'The Legend' Gareth begins to find his feet in Wales, and is drawn in by the passion and pride of the nation for their national sport.

But as much as Gareth wants to break away from his previous life, there are people from his past that are not so keen to make the break, and when they come looking for him, the novel takes on a more sinister angle.

I don't want to give too much away, but if you love a good thriller, a decent game of rugby, or just a good old fashioned sports novel, then this is one for you....

A cracking read that pulled me in from the very start and was very difficult to put down. Nick has managed to tick all of the boxes for me, gritty violence, laugh out loud humour, great characterisation and a excellent final climax.

I was a little nervous about the mix of football and rugby in the book as in my experience many books try to make it work only for it to fail. My fears were misplaced as Nick has pulled it off perfectly. Nick is a genuine sports fan so I should come as no surprise he was able to nail it.

I recommend Nick Rippington to anyone, really looking forward to reading his next books.

I really enjoyed this book. Every time I put it down, I was looking forward to picking it up again as soon as possible. The characters are vivid and the storyline kept me guessing with unexpected twists and turns, surprising me just when I thought I knew what was coming next. The gangster action is both edgy and humorous with some great comic moments. I found Crossing the Whitewash a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable read, which I strongly recommend. I can’t wait to get stuck into Nick Rippington’s next book.

I met Nick at a convention and when his book came out I was eager to read it. I enjoyed Crossing The Whitewash a lot, and it's not my usual type of reading (not a single elf in sight!). The main character, Gary, goes through a very intense, rollercoster journey and the story whips you along with him. The villain, Arnie, is a really nasty piece of work, and you can't help shivering when he's present. Other characters also shine through, particularly when the story moves to Wales (no spoilers!). There's some lovely character moments and brilliant set pieces, but also some scary scenes where I was trying to read between my fingers - especially during the opening. I'd definitely recommend this book if you enjoy gangland thrillers - I've recommended it to friends who read Martina Cole and Mark Billingham, for example.

This is not your typical story of growing up. This is a story of a boy growing into a man, but with a lot of nasty things happening to him as he grew up and became the man he eventually did. It is the story of those nasty things and how what happened to him changed him in many ways. It all begins with a murder in a prison cell, then takes you back to the boy's childhood and leads you through all the things that changed him as he grew into a man and how those misadventures made him the kind of man he was. He played soccer and soccer runs through the story. He even becomes friends with a famous soccer player. A riveting story of violence, retribution, hopes and fears, dreams accomplished and dreams squashed. A hard hitting story, it captured my attention right away and kept it until the very end. I did not want to put it down. Very well written and hard hitting too. Loved it.
