Dimwater's Dragon (The Sorceress of Aspenwood Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 266 ratings

Young Kyra is destined for four years of sorcery training at Kuldiga Academy. After that she will be wed to the man her father has chosen for her and embark upon the perfectly respectable and confining life of a noblewoman in the Middle Kingdom, something she never wanted.

But, when Kyra’s mother is murdered by strange creatures, she is thrust into a world of demons and magic before she is ready. More dangerous still, she finds a dragon egg. Though wisdom would suggest she destroy it before it hatches and wreaks havoc on the land, she realizes that it needs her to survive, for there is a terrible curse threatening to destroy it.

As their relationship grows, she comes to understand that she needs the dragon just as much, if not more so, if she is to survive the creatures that killed her mother and are now tracking her.

I bought this on a whim as it appeared to be a relatively short, stand-alone story that would be easy reading on my phone.

I am so glad I did.

The sad thing is that now I am hoping that this particular story will be continued as I really want to know what happens with some of the broader background stories.

Sam's writing worked well for me, for a 200 page grand adventure that moved with a nice tidy pace.

I have already lined up more of Sam's books to read as I truly7 enjoyed this one and want to explore his world more.

Kyra is 14 and is sent to Kuldiga Academy (think Hogwarts, plus boys learning to fight with swords). She finds
an abandoned dragon's egg and protects it and keeps it warm, despite it being illegal. This is because dragons fell
prey to a disease/curse that sent them mad and made them the enemy of humans. However, Kyra gets help to keep her
    dragon from catching the disease.

Her mother is murdered by an evil creature, which then hunts Kyra seeking a powerful, magic dagger which Kyra's mother
has hidden. Cyrus is her professor at the Academy but he has his own agenda for helping her. We get glimpses of this, which
will obviously be continued in the next book.

The book was short and was "padded out" a bit too much with the children's story about the sun and stars which Kyra read to her
dragon. This made the book feel more suitable for older children and young teens. I didn't think this was as good as "The Dragon's
Champion" which featured Kyra and a few other characters many years forward. I also liked The Dragons of Kendualdern, which
was by this author. The books do not contain sex or swearing and the mythical creatures are interesting.

I loved this book and seriously disappointed that there is no second because so many loose ends were left unfinished. It has everything you want from a fantasy story - feisty heroines, nasty wizards, nastier demons, a hero in the making, idiots who get their comeuppance and even a vampire!

So go read it and if you're not left wanting more, you are reading a different book so try again!

Fantastic book I highly recommend this to all who are fans of fantasy. This sets the scene for all the other stories in the series which I have already read and also highly recommend. Brilliant.

Kyra starts her education at Kuldiga academy, but is never quite accepted by the other students. She discovers her father is a vampire, and her mother had conceived as the vampire's captive. She finds a dragon's egg, and is immediately drawn to the hatching but he s in danger, and it takes some help from a satyr to conceal him. When the academy discover her powers, and her affinity to the Dragon, they resolve to help her. Hovering in the background is the wizard, Cyrus, whose intentions are unclear.

5.0 out of 5 stars A girl and her dragon

This has the beginnings of a fantastic story with a young sorceress and her dragon companion.
The story revolves around Kyra, sent to master her magic at an academy for 4 years. Having no real friends, she finds a place to hide herself away for hours in the woods, where she discovers a dragon egg, something which is supposed to be almost extinct in their world.
This is a tale of self discovery, rebellion, vengeance, magic and friendship that kept me turning the pages long after I should have put the book down and done some adulting!
I'm looking forward to seeing where Kyra goes next in her training in book 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dragon!

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful turn of fantasy by Sam Ferguson. Kyra is young but passionate and smart and it is a joy to see her grow and develop, as she hunts down her destiny. I really valued the groundwork that was laid, to explain the backstory and why Kyra is such a unique character and I didn’t feel there was ‘too much fluff/filling’ as other reviewers have stated. The story moves along at a decent pace, picks up momentum as it should and leaves us with a satisfying ending for this arc - as well as setting the stage for the following storylines yet to come. And I’m keen to see where Kyra leads us next!

I thoroughly enjoyed the character development . I found the ratio of descriptive explanation and back story to plot development well balanced. I like Mr. Ferguson’s writing style and was thrilled to learn that he has 20 plus novels that are set in this wonderful fantasy planet/Universe.
