City of Red Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

COLIN A. MAY'S DEBUT NOVEL, A THRILL RIDE OF VIOLENCE AND SATIRICAL CONTENT. SELF PUBLISHED AND SELF EDITED, HIS FIRST BOOK MAY BE A LITTLE ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES, BUT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE THE EXCITEMENT IN HIS WRITING AND HIS LOVE FOR VISUAL STORY-TELLING.

This city is damaged. This city is broken. This city is rotting from the evil that dwells in it. This city is evil… This is the CITY OF RED. City of Red follows a young couple as they move from the country and attempt to make a fresh start in an over-crowded, modern metropolis. A collection of stories set the scene of a violent and diseased city. This character driven tale takes snippets from some of the city’s colourful inhabitants as they live out their tainted existence. Each story will drag you deeper into their world of obsession and crime. Can a young couple keep their love alive in a city that has slipped into the brink of despair? Bursting with satire and black humour, City of Red tells the author’s vision of an overpopulated, ultra-modern society where mankind’s selfish acts poison their own daily lives.

Strong language and violent scenes set the tone in this modern, stylish tale of love and obsession.

Colin A. May, born and raised in Cornwall, UK. Colin grew up with a love for film, music, and comic books, notably the British comic book series 2000 AD and the comic's main character: Judge Dredd. The artistic freedom that comic books often exhibit opened Colin's mind to the analysis of pop culture, human behaviour and social commentary. For Colin, the use of over-the-top violence is the perfect complement to his critical views on humanity, culture, politics and his general misanthropic beliefs. Despite Colin's use of violence in his writing, he is a great believer of love and peace, but his experiences in life clearly influence his art.

Colin has turned his focus to composing poetry, releasing FOUR books - THE LIGHT IN THE DARK, THE SHADOW IN ME, DECIPHER THE MADNESS and RAMBLINGS OF A TANGLED MIND. He has also released a compilation of his first three poetry collections entitled- COLLECTING EMOTIONS & MADNESS THROUGH POETRY.

CITY OF RED TALES, released on 5th June 2020, delved deeper into the city he created in his debut novel by exploring eleven new tales which continue to paint the picture of the city's bleak existence. Colin regards CITY OF RED TALES as his best work so far.

Colin's first novel, CITY OF RED was released 2017. As an author, Colin wanted to create a city that had become overpopulated and pressed to breaking point, similar to Judge Dredd's Mega-City One. The story of Colin's city is told through a multitude of colourful and often bizarre characters who serve as examples of a modern, dystopian society that is ruled by greed and hatred. A familiar and sometimes uneasy theme of obsession is carried throughout the book. The satire and dark humour regurgitated from the pages of City of Red is a hard-hitting commentary on the 'modern world'. The pace of the story and the action that unfolds, paint a picture of a great love for film and arts. Whether you share the love for Colin's inspirations or not, City of Red holds its own and tells an underlying story of love, commitment and morality.

Colin is also a keen artist, creating paintings, drawings and digital artwork to further decipher and explore his thoughts and often exhibits his creations in his home town of St. Austell, Cornwall. You can follow THE ART OF COLIN A MAY on Facebook for updates.

The author is a close friend of mine and I genuinely didn't know he had this in him, impressive skills and alot of memorable characters and story arcs.

A good read for most part, the book takes mini stories which tie in with the main plot (or not). A couple of instances aren't well written and stop the flow but I enjoyed the novel overall.

At first this book made me angry, then a little bit hungry then POW! Sexually aroused, The ultra violence awoke a bloodlust in me that had been repressed to the back of my mind since my treatment as an angry teenager with violent tendencies, I feel at once liberated by the way this talented author makes the pages come to life in the manner of a budding Anthony burgess or Cassandra Clare, I actually felt inspired to read more Wonderful ultra violence again for the first time in many moons,to hell what the psychiatrist says. I can't wait for this authors next instalment of what disturbingly feels like he writes what's he knows......?

Great, couldn't put this book down. A fun read. Really cool concept and a phenomenal cast. Storylines are clever, well written, and make their way to a great conclusion. A truly unique novel, the likes of which are scarcely seen. The author outdid themselves. 5 Stars for sure.
