About the Author
British author Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was a titan of English literature. Among his most beloved works are classics such as David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and Great Expectations. He wrote continually about the plight of the poor and the division of wealth in nineteenth-century England, the heartbreaking circumstances of which he knew only too well. When Dickens was twelve years old, his father was sent to debtors’ prison, forcing the young boy to leave school and seek factory work to help support his parents and seven siblings. Although Dickens eventually began his literary career as a journalist, it is his endearing novels that have stood the test of time.

About the authors
Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.
Robert Ingpen was born in 1936 in Geelong, Australia. He studied illustration art and book design at The Royal Melbourne Institue of Technology. In 1986 he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children’s literature and he has been honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia.
A world-renowned artist and author, Ingpen has designed, illustrated and written more than one hundred books. His work includes his highly acclaimed series of illustrated children’s classics, a unique achievement by one illustrator, which have now been published in many editions around the world.
Robert now lives and works in Barwon Heads, Australia, near his hometown of Geelong. Further information on Robert Ingpen can be found at www.robertingpen.com

D E McCluskey was born in 1973, in Liverpool, England. He is the author of novels, graphic novels and comics. He lives with his daughter (an author in her own right (at the age of 8) with her children's adventure The Hangry Hamster), his partner, her daughter, and a sausage dog called Ted.
He began writing in 2011, creating his first comic publication entitled Interesting Tymes, an anthology of short horror stories written in rhyme for children and adults. This was quickly followed by the second in the series, along with a spin off. Dave then moved on to more adult related fiction, releasing a number of one-shot comics, followed by his first, full length book, the graphic novel, Doppelgänger.
More graphic novels and comics ensued, including a collaboration with artist Joe Matthews to produce a retelling of the classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, only this time rewritten completely in rhyme.
Dave then turned his sights onto writing novels. His debut novel The Twelve was released in 2017 to great reviews. This was followed by a collaboration with a local, Liverpool music historian, to produce a historical thriller called In The Mood… For Murder, based in Liverpool in 1946.
Dave likes to work mostly in dark, or mainstream horror, although he has cross genres into extreme horror, comedy, thrillers, romantic drama, and children's books.
He is also working with a number of other authors/comic creators, in collaborations in their works.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 December 2024I’ve watched the muppets Christmas Carol for many years and just assumed that the main story was took from the book. But whilst reading this, it’s quite the opposite. Lines from the songs took directly from the text. Some aspects missing from the film and delved into more in the book. I say more, the book came first. A joy to read. I’m enjoying reading these classics recently, I always assumed whilst I was younger that these books would take an age to read, this less than a few hours. God Bless us, Everyone.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2024Small enough to carry anywhere, big enough to be impressive and easy to read . Always loved the film, now I have the book .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 December 2017I thought I should at least read something loosely related to Christmas this December. I'm sure that everybody knows the Christmas Carol story. However, my early recollections seemed to involve Disney's Donald Duck and some of Mickey Mouse's relatives. I was slightly bemused by this vague memory and thought I must have been mistaken until I found the list of film adaptations.
It seems that there was a Disney version of this and DD had been renamed Scrooge McDuck for the purposes. Very confusing for a child. Anyway....
The book is somewhat different as, year after year, the miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge makes it his business to ruin Christmas for everybody. This, until, his former business partner's ghost appears and warns him of several expected visitors. The ghost of Christmas past, present and future seek to remind Scrooge of his failings, show him that he has no excuse and warn him of his eventual demise if he doesn't mend his ways. The shock of the spooky meanderings by themselves would probably have been enough to jolt any sane person to their senses and Scrooge is no exception as he dramatically seeks to change his ways.
I hear groans from some as I look at what this book can teach us spiritually. I'm not sure that much can be learned from ghosts, in duck form or otherwise, seeing as they don't exist, well at least, they aren't reappearances of those who have already departed. Perhaps, though, we can learn what Christmas is not about through this tale:
There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,” returned the nephew. “Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!
You will note that the nephew highlights everything except the true meaning of Christmas. This, he touches on briefly in the form of veneration rather than a celebration of the biggest event ever to occur on planet Earth (apart from the crucifixion!)
I've noticed an increasing hardness of heart year on year as people get busier and busier celebrating something that they know little or nothing about. Gifts abound and credit cards are maxed out for this event that people spend all year thinking about and planning for....yet the true meaning has been totally lost. It would be seriously bizarre if it wasn't so tragic that the enemy has succeeded in blinding the eyes of so many people through materialism, or a misplaced focus on religious tradition.
On a side note, I also noticed that Dickens had a brief dig at conservative Christians in this novel as he commented that it was a misinterpretation of the will of the higher power for shops and other commercial enterprises to be closed on Sundays.
There was one useful gem in the book which we would do well to bear in mind:
Not to know that no space of regret can make amends for one life’s opportunity misused!
Life is an opportunity to serve God and to tell others of the good news of Jesus Christ especially at this time of the year when we remember His birth. Let's keep the true meaning of Christmas at the centre of our celebrations and offer hope to those who don't yet know Him!
