This book is an inspiration. Simon (the author) redirected a successful corporate life into one of purpose (as a paramedic) due to a near tragic accident involving his son. It’s a tale of emersion, commitment and hope that will touch any person who has been involved in caring for someone. That would be all of us!

An excellent Insight into life on the road as a Paramedic
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2024
This is more than a memoir by someone who took a new career direction, although the story of Simon’s steep learning curve to become a paramedic is told with clarity and disarming honesty. Writing diary-style, in the present tense, he really makes us feel as if we are on the journey with him, experiencing all the dramas, disappointments and triumphs.
But it’s Simon’s unique viewpoint, as someone who came from a high-flying corporate career, that makes this book special. He has some fascinating insights into what (and how) the corporate world could learn from his new colleagues and managers in the emergency services – and vice versa.
An immensely enjoyable and thought-provoking book.

The book details a year in the author's life as a paramedic, right from him starting training.

This was a bit different in that he's not fresh out of school or uni-he was 50, his career has been in business, and due to a medical emergency of his own, he decided to completely change his career.

At the start of the book he is moving to America to take up a new job. Moving from Britain.  Months later, things are going well. Then an emergency strikes that changes everything.

A good solid read, and unpredictable.  The emergency that changed everything wasn't due to an RTA. It hadn't happened in England, and it didn't happen to him, it was his younger son.

An interesting and fascinating book.  Easy reading, constructed of short chunks/scenes.

I really enjoyed reading the author's journey from leaving the Corporate World to the Life of a Paramedic. I admired his desire to leave the world he knew and truly go after his passion, the drive to help other people. It makes me have so much more respect for the EMTs, firefighters and all the First Responders. I would highly recommend this memoir.
